Chapter Ten

“Hey, what’s up with you? I haven’t been able to get three words in a row out of you all day.”

Joshua had finally reached the end of his patience with his sister by late the next afternoon. They’d finished with the day’s dash through each of the classes on her schedule and were back at the chancellor’s cottage. Joshua had suggested going for coffee or ice cream or a walk in the town square but had been met with only uninterested shrugs in answer to each one. After a day full of those kinds of responses, he’d given up, brought Alyssa to the privacy of the cottage and decided to address what he’d originally thought was PMS or a generic bad mood but was now thinking otherwise.

“Are you PO’d at me for something?” he added.

“You said you wouldn’t do it,” Alyssa said, clearly unhappy with him.

“I said I wouldn’t do what?”

“Get into anything with Cassie Walker. But last night, Tim walked me back to the dorm and we took the long way around and I saw the two of you.”

There was enough righteous indignation in his sister’s tone to let Joshua know that Alyssa had to have seen him kissing Cassie at her car after their motorcycle ride.

Alyssa had come into the cottage and plopped down on the sofa. Joshua had remained standing. But now he sat, too, in the armchair directly across from the couch and his sister.

“Yeah, okay, I kissed her,” he admitted guiltily. “I know I shouldn’t have. I knew I shouldn’t be doing it when I did it.”

“But you did it anyway. A hot one.”

Great, she’d seen it all….

“Too hot to be a first kiss,” Alyssa continued. “You said you wouldn’t do this with her and there you were. Tim didn’t know it was you at first, he just saw the two of you there, like that, and he said, ‘Get a room’—that’s how hot it was.”

“It wasn’t that bad,” Joshua defended feebly.

“You shouldn’t have been kissing her at all. You said you wouldn’t do this and you did.”

Joshua sighed and gave up trying to defend the indefensible. “I know,” he said. “I’m sorry. I just… I like her.”

“You liked her from the start. But we talked about this, about her being the same kind of person as Jennie, only more so, and how that made her wrong for you and you promised you wouldn’t go after her.”

“I know, I know.”

“So what did you do, forget? About Jennie and all that? Did you forget what happened? What could happen again?”

“No, I didn’t forget. But…I don’t know, I guess being here is like being almost on another planet—somewhere where things are different. So far, we’re fitting in and we’ve had the chance to be like everyone else and it all feels safe and removed, and… I don’t know,” he repeated. “It’s just been nice. Nice not having to look over my shoulder. Nice to just be myself. Nice to just get to know Cassie and her
